About Us
St. Thomas is a Catholic, Pre-K - 6, School that offers:
- Practice and instruction in Catholic Faith and values - Opportunity for Prayer Services - Liturgies - Outreach Ministries. Our faith is a way of life.
- Religious Instruction occurs each day and includes history of our faith, ways to pray, making choices and decisions, preparation for weekend Masses and attendance at Holy Day Masses as well as sacramental preparation for Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation.
- A Kindergarten program that offers the option of half-day or full day programs.
- A Pre-K program for four year olds - with options of two, three or five day programs.
- Language Arts instruction which connects Reading and Writing processes with an emphasis on skills and strategies.
- A problem solving Mathematics program emphasizing a traditional number sense (facts) in the use of mathematical reasoning to make sense of the world.
- Technology that is integrated across the curriculum in the use of classroom computers, as well as a computer lab with access to the internet. Keyboarding , word-processing and other skills are taught.
- An emphasis on applying fundamental processes and knowledge to create higher order thinking skills across the curriculum.
- A variety of traditional and student centered instructional techniques, including Cooperative Learning and Inquiry as well as Direct Teaching and Mastery Learning.
- A curriculum that is aligned to the Maine Learning Results.
- Progress reports for grades 4,5 and 6 half-way through each term. Report cards for all students four times a year.
- A recently updated library with hundreds of new books and resources.
- French - Conversational French is introduced in the second grade for 2 half hour sessions per week. Instruction continues through the grades. 6th grade students read and write French, as well as demonstrate speaking skills.
- Music instruction for grades - K-6 includes instruction in singing, reading and performing of music. Movement is also included in the curriculum.
- Physical Education for grades K-6 , Combining competition and cooperation the P.E. program focuses on skill building. Classes consist of a warm-up exercise, a planned activity and a cool down period.
- Art instruction including art history, various media and techniques. Art exhibit during Catholic Schools Week.
- National Achievement Tests and Local Assessments based on the Maine Learning Results.
- DARE program for grades 2, 4 and 6
- Experiential approach to Science through an investigative process. Students are actively engaged in learning through a variety of experiences. Such experiences include observing, classifying, collecting data and making and using models. These approaches enable students to draw upon their personal experiences in order to develop knowledge of scientific concepts and principles. These process skills can then be applied across the curriculum.
- Emphasis on Citizenship Skills, and being able to function as a productive member of society through Responsive Classroom Techniques.
- Social Science focuses those skills on understanding cultures and learning how a community lives.
- Junior Achievement Program taught by area business people in grades 3 - 6.
- Extra-curricular activities include: Basketball Program for boys and girls in grades 4-6, Musical instrumental instruction for grades 4-6, Drama Club for all ages, Art Club for all ages.
- The school offers an Extended Day Program for our families. Students arrive at 7:00 AM and are in the program until 8:15 AM. The afternoon program begins at 3:15 PM and goes until 5:30 PM.
- Hot Lunch Program- Meals are prepared at the school and meet the Federal Nutritional Guidelines.
